Over 200 students aged 12 to 18 are expected to take part in Rethinking Futures® at PlantWorx 2025, which takes place from 23–25 September at Newark Showground. The project is designed to connect secondary schools and colleges with the construction, engineering, and plant sectors through a practical challenge and meaningful careers engagement.
The initiative, which supports efforts to tackle the growing skills gap in the industry, has already confirmed strong participation from across Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire and Derbyshire. Eighteen school and college teams are already signed up to take part in the live build competition (on Tuesday 23rd September), with more expected to join over the coming weeks. Several additional schools not participating in the build element are attending the careers event, recognising the value of the day as a route into construction and engineering.
At the heart of Rethinking Futures® is a materials handling challenge, inspired by real industry machinery such as grab lorries, HIABs, cranes, and excavators. Each student team is tasked with designing and building a working model capable of lifting and moving objects using the materials provided. While the Rethinking Futures® team will support each school throughout, students will lead the design and build process themselves. Schools are also encouraged to document their progress, creating short videos, which will be shown as part of a visual display during the live event at PlantWorx.
Alongside the challenge, students will have the opportunity to speak directly with industry professionals and training providers. The event is growing into a significant careers day, giving attendees the chance to learn more about apprenticeships, career pathways and training options within construction and related sectors.
A wide range of organisations have committed their support, including Wirtgen Group, Lindum Group, AMEY Briggs, and Murphy Group (the headline sponsor). Industry groups, such as the Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA), and other major manufacturers are also involved. Many others from education, training, engineering, and local government are participating in or supporting the project in various ways. The goal is to welcome up to 20 colleges, universities, and training organisations, creating a meaningful and realistic connection between the classroom and the workplace. For many students, this will be their first direct interaction with employers in the sector.
Rethinking Futures® is committed to giving young people a reason to consider a future in construction and engineering – not through brochures or presentations, but by involving them directly in building, problem-solving and teamwork, with their work showcased at the UK’s largest working construction equipment show.

Thursday 25th September is Student Day at PlantWorx – and everyone’s welcome.
Whether you’re studying construction, exploring career options, or simply curious about the industry, Student Day is open to all schools, colleges, training providers, youth groups – and families. There’s no age restriction, and mums and dads are also very welcome (please note that an adult must accompany children under 16). With live machine demos, hands-on exhibits, and the chance to speak with apprentices and industry professionals, it’s a practical and engaging way to discover if a career in construction and engineering is an option.
Student Day is separate from the Rethinking Futures® schools challenge, and offers a wider opportunity for visitors of all ages to experience PlantWorx and explore what the industry has to offer. Entry is free, and teachers and careers leads are encouraged to register early to secure places.>
