County Fermanagh based Campbell Contracts is one of the main sub-contractors on the Larne A8 road upgrade scheme in Northern Ireland. The Larne A8 will be a new dual carriageway linking Belfast and Larne, which is on the east coast of County Antrim. The £100m project will provide a 14.4km and work is expected to take around two and a half years to complete.
Campbell Contracts currently have 16 machines working on the Larne A8 project – all the excavators working onsite are fitted with Hill Engineering quick hitches!
Rory Kelly is Campbell Contracts Health & Safety manager he said, “We first started using Hill Engineering for their road brushes and dump trailers back in the early 1990's and found them to be very reliable and well made. Our first Hill quick hitch came on a Samsung 210 Tracked Excavator in 1996 and it proved again to be dependable and easy to use and so we have continued to use Hill accessories for this reason.”
Donal Cunningham, regional sales manager at Hill Engineering said, “Rory contacted us about two years ago as the company wanted to upgrade ALL their semi-automatic quick hitches to the latest generation Hill fully automatics. We supplied Campbell’s at the time with our previous quick hitch model, the AL3 quick hitch. Since then they have specified Hill hitches on all their new machines bought from the Case dealer, Sleator Plant, who also specify, when possible, the Hill Tefra quick hitch”.
Campbell Contracts currently has 18 Hill quick hitches in use on their machines and half of these are the latest Tefra model. Mr Kelly added, “Our plant operators like Hill quick hitches, they are easy to operate, easy to maintain and rarely give bother. When you do the work we do it’s very important to have a safe and reliable quick hitch.
“The majority of our hitches from Hill are a custom specification and Hill is happy to make the hitches to suit our requirements. When Hill offer a warranty on their work they stand over it and there is never a problem about getting parts or servicing undertaken on our range of quick hitches.” Concluded Mr Kelley.
More on Larne A8…..
A statement from the Port of Larne has welcomed news that the Larne A8 upgrade is forging ahead.
"The Regional Development Strategy recognises Larne as a gateway and this road as one of the key transport corridors in Northern Ireland," it said.
"The port has waited many years for this final piece of dualling to take place.
"This project will help to support the development of business and tourism not just for Larne and East Antrim, but for the whole of Northern Ireland for many years to come."
Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy said, “In the current economic climate, the commencement of this dual carriageway, along the Eastern Seaboard Key Transport Corridor, will be welcome news for the construction industry and when completed, contribute to the overall economic development of Northern Ireland.
"The scheme has lead to an increase in demand for local suppliers of construction material as well as a boost to commercial trade in the surrounding area."
