AMPS Awards For Excellence 2024 – Celebrating Innovation, Investment, and Sustainability

London, 14th November 2024 – The AMPS (The Association of Manufacturers and suppliers of Power Systems) Awards for Excellence lit up the Historic De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms, bringing together the power industry’s best to celebrate innovation, sustainability, and outstanding achievements. The evening recognised the sector’s commitment to progress, investment, and the future of the industry.

AMPS Director General David Oates reflected on the evening’s success: “This evening has been a fantastic showcase of the innovation, talent, and investment that makes our industry so strong. Louise Hazel, AMPS chair, delivered an excellent opening address, setting the tone perfectly by highlighting the importance of collaboration and the shared drive to shape a better future for the power sector. Apprenticeship Programme of the Year – Sponsored by Generator Power Ltd

The newly introduced Apprenticeship Programme of the Year showcased exceptional entries, highlighting companies’ commitment to investing in future talent. This category received three outstanding submissions, each demonstrating high-quality programmes designed to attract and nurture the next generation of industry leaders. Judges were impressed by the structure, dedication, and passion evident across all entries, with a clear focus on bringing new talent into the power sector.

Winner: WB Power Services Ltd
WB Power Services Ltd stood out with its comprehensive and forward-thinking apprenticeship programme, which impressed the panel with its innovation and impact. The company’s investment in a state-of-the-art training facility at its Heanor headquarters—one of only two in Europe—highlighted its dedication to quality training.

The programme provides apprentices with a structured pathway to successful careers in the power sector, from MOET electromechanical qualifications to advanced training using the latest technology. Success stories include former apprentices progressing to leadership roles, a testament to the programme’s effectiveness. Inclusivity is a priority, with a strong focus on equipping apprentices with practical skills to thrive and make a meaningful impact.

Business Growth and Strategy – Sponsored by WB Power Services
This category celebrated companies driving growth through innovation and strategic investment in a sector shaped by technology and emissions challenges.

Winner: Wernick Group
Wernick Group’s growth strategy impressed the judges. The company expanded operations to 63 staff across six hubs and increased revenue from £16 million in 2023 to a projected £20 million in 2024. Strategic investments of £10.8 million in cutting-edge technology, such as PP200 Flybrids, battery storage units, and Stage V generators, highlighted their forward-thinking approach.

Additionally, their £2.1 million investment in sustainable solutions like SolarFrames and smart systems demonstrates a clear focus on environmental responsibility. Wernick also reduced generator runtime by 83% at a major project site, significantly cutting emissions. Strategic acquisitions, including Anderson Engineering, and operational restructuring further cemented their reputation for innovation and growth.

Their hybrid control solution, deployed at the Saudi Arabia F1 Jeddah Marina, integrates renewable sources like solar PV and wind to optimise energy flow. Using machine learning, the system reduces energy losses while aligning with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 goals. Judges commended the company’s innovation, impact, and use of recyclable materials.

Clarke Energy’s greenhouse project in Streatham is a game-changer for food and agriculture. The facility, designed to produce 10% of Britain’s cucumbers, features the UK’s largest water source heat pump system, cutting emissions while reducing reliance on imports. Rainwater harvesting, energy-efficient lighting, and CHP units make this project a model for sustainable innovation, creating jobs and economic benefits for the local community.
