The 8th Lighthouse Run is taking place this weekend (15th – 17th October). The event, which is being sponsored by CPA (Construction Plant-hire Association) as part of the association’s 75-year anniversary celebrations, consists of a drive from John O’Groats to Land’s End, in six stages over two days following a pre-set route.
CPA has its own team taking the challenge, ‘Alas Smith and Brown’, which is made up of CPA’s legal manager David Smith and Peter Brown who is CPA’s technical development manager. Alas Smith and Brown will be completing the run in Peter’s Fiat 500 Abarth, and therefore becomes ‘2 Men in a bath’ driving around the country!
“We are delighted to be representing CPA in this charity run to celebrate our 75th anniversary. It’s a driving and navigation challenge rather than a race and we are ready for the task! With the commute to and from the event we will be covering just short of 2000 miles – but it’s for a deserving cause and we are very much looking forward to the challenge.” Commented Peter Brown.
David Smith added, “As the CPA has been a long-standing supporter of the Lighthouse Club; Peter and I are pleased to participate in this year’s John O’Groats to Land’s End challenge to help mark the Lighthouse Club’s 60th anniversary, and the CPA’s 75th anniversary. Peter and I are looking forward to meeting the other teams and completing the course.”
CPA director Kevin Minton also commented on the run – he said “CPA is pleased to continue to support the Lighthouse Club and its work for the construction industry, and we’re grateful to the organisers for putting the event together. It is great that Peter and David are taking part and – along with all the other teams – we hope they have an enjoyable and safe journey.”
Setting out from John O’Groats the drive will take drivers through some of the most beautiful and spectacular scenery in Britain, through the Scottish Highlands and then down to the Lake District. The next day will take drivers through Wales and the West Country to Land’s End. There are a total of twelve teams taking part in the challenge in addition to CPA, these include, Allbrook Construction, Mercury Construction, JC Balls, Randstad and HPC Kaeser.
This is not a race or a competition, the emphasis is very much on having fun with like-minded people and raising money for the Lighthouse Club Construction Industry Charity. Drivers will need to use their wits to navigate to various checkpoints on the designated route and rule number one is no Sat Navs! The car with the least recorded mileage at the end of the run is the winner.
CPA will be reporting on ‘Alas Smith and Brown’s’ progress over the weekend on Twitter – if you would like to see how David and Peter are getting on and show your support for the Lighthouse Club and ‘2 Men in a bath’ – follow @CPA_Planthire and @LighthouseClub_
