Nordbau 2020: “Loft convertion and extension”and “Recycling in building construction and civil engineering”

With the special exhibitions “Loft convertion and extension “and” Recycling in building construction and civil engineering”, the 65th edition of NordBau shall focus on two topics, which are the focal points of many visitors: much needed and affordable living space in metropolitan areas and responsible handling of the increasingly scarce raw materials in the construction industry.

(Neumünster) From the 9th to the 13th of September 2020, the 65th edition of NordBau will take place at the Holstenhallen Neumünster exhibition grounds in Schleswig-Holstein. For over six decades, the largest compact trade fair for construction has been the meeting point for the construction industry and all construction managers in northern Europe.

Creating new living spaces – Convert and extend lofts!

In cooperation with the Schleswig-Holstein Ministry of Construction and the Schleswig-Holstein’s State guild association of the Roofing Trade, the 65th edition of NordBau with its special theme “Convert and extend lofts” will be setting an important signal, at a time when living space in metropolitan areas is becoming increasingly scarce. Thanks to the new regulation of the Schleswig-Holstein State Building Code of last year, it is now easier to create much needed living space, especially in cities.

“Loft conversions also presents great potential. In Schleswig-Holstein, where living space and – above all – building plots are scarce, thousands of apartments could be built. The special theme “Convert and extend lofts” will offer the owners of residential buildings the opportunity of getting specific and practical information about the potential of their own property”,

said Alexander Blažek, Chairman of Haus & Grund Schleswig-Holstein, praising the decision of the exhibition management to favor this important special theme.

Above all, the major focus of this special exhibition is the densification of existing buildings through the loft conversion and extension. There, property owners, builders, and housing associations can get to learn more and check their own properties for expansion possibilities. Inspiring ideas in 1:1 models of the Schleswig-Holstein State Guild Association of the Roofing Trade demonstrate modern approaches and options for converting lofts into pitched roofs, as well as the chance of additions to flat roofs. The Schleswig-Holstein Ministry of Interior will provide information on special subsidies, distance regulations, modern building and insulation materials. The fact that NordBau opens many opportunities for many architects, civil engineers, tradesmen and property owners with this special theme is also shown by the fact that the “Construction Minister’s Day” during the exhibition on September 11, 2020 is centered around the theme “Loft convertion and extension”

“A second life for building materials” – Recycling in construction and civil engineering

With increasingly scarce raw materials, high transport costs and growing problems of the accumulation of hazardous waste: The theme “Recycling in construction and civil engineering” concerns everyone involved in the construction industry. For this reason, NordBau, in cooperation with the Working Group for Contemporary Building, the Schleswig-Holstein Ministry of Energy Transition, Agriculture, Environment and Digitization, as well as the Technical University of Lübeck, will be organizing a special exhibition on around 400 square meters. This is intended to show all parties involved in construction how to secure raw material, avoid hazardous waste, use regional building materials, reduce transport costs, as well as how to exploit opportunities for recycling these materials. Professor Dr. Helmut Offermann from the Technical University in Lübeck says: “Of all the sectors in the economy, the construction sector generates the most waste. This is why we must take advantage of recycling opportunities. If we want to build in a resource-conserving manner, we must also think about the lifespan of building materials.

The desire for new building materials is only one side of the coin, disposal is another! Regional building materials that are being recycled could be the way forward. To do this, builders need to consciously opt for regional building materials, while manufacturers of building materials need to offer separable materials.”

Figures, dates and facts

On around 69,000 square meters of open-air exhibition ground and over 20,000 square meters of hall space, NordBau impressively demonstrates its strength and position as the most important compact construction exhibition in Northern Europe and the entire Baltic Sea region. Over 800 exhibitors from 13 countries reach out to around 63,000 visitors annually via NordBau. The 50 seminars and events that always accompany the exhibition attract a total of 4,300 conference participants, with two-thirds of the conferences being recognized by the Chamber of Architects and Engineers as an official training event. Since 1956, exhibitors have been able to reach numerous trade visitors and end customers (public and private builders) via NordBau. NordBau thus has a high level of acceptance and appeal for all those interested in construction, as well as for those working in the construction industry. In addition, for over 40 years now, NordBau has been cooperating with its partner country Denmark, who sees the exhibition as the basis for the German and European market.
