Berlin, 15 July 2010 – Brazil has announced it will invest billions in its infrastructure over the next few years. The focus is on efficient and intelligent rail mobility solutions. The preparations now under way for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games in 2016 give an added impetus to these developments. Foreign companies are currently stepping up their activities in South America’s largest country. At the same time more and more companies from Brazil are showcasing their products on the international stage. InnoTrans 2010 – the world’s leading trade fair for rail transport technology – is significant proof of this trend.
Whereas two years ago only two companies from Brazil attended InnoTrans in Berlin, this year 26 companies and associations will be represented at the fair. The majority of exhibitors are exhibiting their innovative products and services at a combined stand in Hall 10.2, a first for Brazil. Among the exhibitors are leading companies such as Randon, ALL, Vale, Transnordestina, MRS Logística and Amsted Maxion Fundição e Equipamentos Ferroviários.
Both the Brazilian government and the rail industry associations ABIFER, ANTF and SIMEFRE are supporting their participation.
Vicente Abare, President of the Brazilian Railway Industry Association (ABIFER): “Brazil’s railways are currently undergoing rapid and sustained expansion. The huge levels of growth in the goods transport sector in particular mean that the railway system requires considerable investment. The fact that three large railway lines are now simultaneously under construction is merely one example of this trend. The challenges facing public transport in large conurbations can only be met by building underground and local rail systems. With new factories springing up and production of locomotives, carriages and systems on the increase, Brazil’s rail industry is currently in the middle of an expansion phase. Against this backdrop, Brazilian rail systems manufacturers and rail operators will be at InnoTrans for the first time. They are showcasing their products at Brazil’s combined stand, highlighting their import and export requirements, and will also be in search of joint venture partners.“
Exhibitors at Brazil’s combined stand include Randon S.A., a leading rail transport technology company in Brazil. Among other things the company is responsible for 30 per cent of the country’s goods wagon production. According to Celso Santa Catarina, Head of Production at Randon S.A., the company has high expectations for InnoTrans and is aiming to intensify relations with manufacturers, suppliers and customers. Among its strong points are flexible production lines which are capable of responding quickly to market demands. “This means we can manufacture easy-to-operate, lightweight and robust products which incur low maintenance costs“, says Celso Santa Catarina.
Besides the companies exhibiting at the fair numerous trade visitors will also be arriving from Brazil to attend InnoTrans 2010. Trade visitors from other South American countries, including Argentina and Chile, are also expected to be in Berlin.
According to the Association of the Railway Industry in Germany (VDB), with an average growth rate of 6.0 to 6.5 % South America is now already the world’s largest growth market for rail technology. VDB estimates that between 2009 and 2012 the volume of Brazil’s market for rail technology, including services, will be equivalent to approximately EUR 4.6 billion.
