MEED reveals national winners for quality projects in the Gulf region

Dubai, United Arab Emirates; 20 March 2017 – MEED has announced the national winners of the highest quality projects in the GCC.
A total of 87 projects were recognised as the best at the national level with the United Arab Emirates leading all countries with 43 national winners, followed by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Oman with 10 each. Kuwait had nine national winners, followed by Qatar with eight while Bahrain had four. Three outstanding suppliers were also given awards.

The national winners in the seventh edition of the MEED Quality Awards for Projects, have been decided by MEED’s team of independent judges. The successful projects will now move through to the second round of judging to find the highest-quality GCC projects in the following categories: Besix Innovation Project of the Year, Commercial Project of the Year, Leisure & Tourism Project of the Year, Oil and Gas Project of the Year, Hotel Project of the Year, Award for Sustainability, Healthcare Project of the Year, Mixed-use Project of the Year, Education Project of the Year, Small Project of the Year, Logistics Project of the Year, Supplier of the Year, Building Project of the Year, Power Project of the Year, Retail Project of the Year, Water Project of the Year, Social, Culture & Heritage Project of the Year, Residential Project of the Year, Transport Project of the Year, Mega Project of the Year; and Road, Bridge, Tunnel Project of the Year.
As well as competing for the GCC award in their specific sectors, the national winners are in with a chance to win the coveted title of the MEED Quality Project of the Year.
The MEED Quality Awards for Projects have become the leading stamp of quality and achievement for anyone operating in the GCC projects sector. The awards not only recognise the construction element of project delivery but also consider the value and quality of a project throughout its entire life cycle, from the design concept through to engineering and construction and its wider contribution to society and to the environment.

Bahrain’s national winners include the Ministry of Youth & Sports Affairs’ Muharraq Model Youth Centre Project (Social, Culture & Heritage Project of the Year), Bin Faqeeh Real Estate Investment Company SPC’s Dar Al Salam- Reef Island Project (Residential Project of the Year) and MWH’s Ma’Amir Sewage Treatment Plant Project (Small Project of the Year and Award for Sustainability).
The winning projects at the Kuwait national level are Shamal Az Zour Al Oula’s Az-Zour North One Power and Water Plant Project (Mega Project of the Year, Power Project of the Year and Water Project of the Year), Gensler & Associates International Limited’s Avenues Phase 3 Project (Retail Project of the Year), AGi architects’ Three Gardens Project (Residential Project of the Year), Jahra & Farwaniya Courts Complexes Project (Building Project of the Year and Small Project of the Year), Kuwait Oil Company’s (KOC) Construction of 11KV Ahmadi E substation in Ahmadi Township Project (Power Project of the Year) and Larsen & Toubro Limited-Power Transmission & Distribution’s Supply & Installation of 132/11 kV GIS Substation SGRE-A at Shagaya Area And Two Bay Extension at SHAG-A Substation Project (Small Project of the Year).

Oman’s national winners include Hoehler + alSalmy’s Conference and Exhibition Hall at GUtech Project (Building Project of the Year), AWS Engineering LLC’s BP Remediation Project at Post of Salalah Project (Award for Sustainability), Atelier Pod and Engineering Innovation Design & Consulting’s Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort Project (Hotel Project of the Year), Musstir’s Al Baleed Resort Project (Hotel Project of the Year), Larsen & Toubro (Oman) LLC’s Construction of New 400KV Grid Station at Izki Project (Power Project of the Year), Public Authority for Electricity & Water’s Construction of Extensions to the Water Supply Network at Nizwa Project (Water Project of the Year), AWS Engineering LLC’s EPC for Sohar Refinery Sea Water Cooling System Revamp Project (Oil & Gas Project of the Year and Small Project of the Year), Six Construct’s Sohar Industrial Port Project (Water Project of the Year) and Larsen & Toubro (Oman) LLC’s Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex Project (Social, Culture & Heritage Project of the Year).
The eight winning projects from Qatar are ASTAD’s Northwestern University in Qatar Project (Education Project of the Year); Al Malki Trading & Contracting’s Dukhan Tunnel Project (Small Project of the Year); Galfar Al Misnad Engineering & Contracting W.L.L’s EPIC for Route survey, Design, Construction, Installation and Hookup of Oil, Gaslift flowline, PWI spur lines in Dukhan field Project (Oil and Gas Project of the Year) and Six Construct’s Qatar Gabbro Terminal (Bulk Material Handling System) Project (Logistics Project of the Year).
The Public Works Authority-Ashghal had three national winners, namely the Doha North Sewage Treatment Works Project (Award for Sustainability and Water Project of the Year), Salwa Road Project (Road, Bridge, Tunnel Project of the Year) and Medical City Fit Out Project (Healthcare Project of the Year).
In the UAE, the national winners include ADMARES’ Burj Al Arab Terrace Project (Besix Innovation Project of the Year), Bombardier Transportation’s Dubai Airport T1-CD Automated People Mover Project (Besix Innovation Project of the Year and Transport Project of the Year), Consolidated Contractors Company’s Dubai Opera Project (Besix Innovation Project of the Year, Leisure & Tourism Project of the Year and Social, Culture & Heritage Project of the Year), Parson’s Dubai Water Canal Project (Besix Innovation Project of the Year and Leisure & Tourism Project of the Year), AECOM’s Sheikh Mohammed bid Rashid Al Maktoum Road Project (Road, Bridge, Tunnel Project of the Year), Al Futtaim Carillion’s One Central Phase 1, The Offices 1 Project (Commercial Project of the Year), Al Sahel Contracting Co. Three Emirates-based projects scooped the Hotel Project of the Year national winner award including Faithful+Gould’s Four Seasons Abu Dhabi Project, China State Construction Engineering Corporation Middle East L.L.C. & P&T Architects and Engineers Ltd’s Viceroy Hotel Resorts & Residences Palm Jumeirah Project and Al Jihan Gulf Horizon General Contracting LLC’s Nurai Island Resort by Zaya Project.
The Award for Sustainability category also had three national winners from the UAE, among them ASGC’s Waldorf Astoria, The Palm Jumeirah Project, Atkins’ Al Ain Bus Station Project and Six Construct’s Sewage Treatment Plant at Ruwais Project, which also won in the Water Project of the Year.

Parson’s City Walk Project won multiple honours, including Mixed-use Project of the Year and Residential Project of the Year. Meanwhile, Al Futtaim Carillion’s City Walk Phase 2 Retail Development Project (Retail Project of the Year).
ASGC’s Etihad Museum Project received national winner awards in four different categories, namely the Building Project of the Year, Besix Innovation Project of the Year, Leisure & Tourism Project of the Year and Social, Culture & Heritage Project of the Year.

Among the projects recognised as national winners in Saudi Arabia were Alfanar Construction Co’s Haramin High Speed Railway Six 380kV Substation Project (Power Project of the Year), Arcadis’ Makkah Reservoirs Project (Water Project of the Year), Jabal Omar Development Company’s Jabal Omar Development Project (Mixed-use Project of the Year), Lifestyle Developers’ Saudi German Hospital Hail project (Healthcare Project of the Year), Samsung Engineering’s Shaybah-NGL (Natural Gas Liquid) Project (Mega Project of the Year and Oil & Gas Project of the Year), TAV Construction’s Design & Build of Terminal 5 and Related Facilities in King Khaled International Airport Project (Transport Project of the Year), Sadara’s Sadara Project (Oil & Gas Project of the Year), Saudi Industrial Property Authority’s Modon Lake Project (Leisure & Tourism Project of the Year) and Larsen & Toubro Limited-Power Transmission & Distribution’s Connection of Al-Dawadmi BSP S/S # 9037 with 132 kV Network in Riyadh Area Project (Small Project of the Year).
Three other winners were named Supplier of the Year, including Almajdouie Logistics Co, Hempel Paints Qatar WLL and MVP Tech.
